I am so grateful for the two vases of flowers sitting on my desk. They lift my spirits and remind me to stay present each time I see them. Thank you, super-cool-boss-couple and Shelly (my amazing step-mom) and Dad. A week ago today, I found out the good news and got started with revisions. This past week has been an exciting ride with my manuscript!
Here are some things I learned while editing, editing, editing:
1. Take breaks. Sometimes I just needed to go to the grocery store, read a blog, take a walk, call a friend, or do the dishes in order to push the restart button on my brain. Then, I could return to writing feeling refreshed and clear-headed. It’s easy to let household stuff pile up while focusing on a big project, which can be a major mental energy drain. I found that taking 15 minutes to fold the laundry helped me reduce stress and gave my mind a much needed rest!
2. Take chances. Now that I’m working collaboratively on my book, I have the chance to step back and take in my agent’s suggestions. It was exciting and eye-opening to let my book take some new turns. Even if certain revisions don’t make the final cut, I’m all the wiser after experimenting. You never know what gems you’ll find!
3. Take care of yourself. Last night, I crawled into bed at 9pm with Charlaine Harris’ latest book, Dead in the Family. I was fast asleep by 10pm (not because of the book, I was tuckered out)! I can’t remember the last time I hit the hay that early. I also made a point to avoid my office and computer that evening. I’d practically had it attached to my hip for weeks and it was time to look at paper and ink rather than a bright shiny screen. I’ve also been doing yoga and I even dusted off my Sivanada Satsang book. There’s nothing like a little kirtan to clear your mind and boost your spirits!
That’s all for tonight. I’m off to watch LOST with some Charm City friends (only a few more weeks until the finale!). I’m still completely obsessed with Fringe and wish that I had back to back episodes to watch. One week is one week to long without my dear Walter, Peter, and Olivia. Did anyone watch it last week? Whoa! Also, anyone else excited for True Blood Season 3? Only one more month!
