Skip the dishes + take a walk.

by Corinne on July 25, 2012

After dinner tonight, Steve asked me what I had planned for the evening. I heaved a great sigh. Laundry folding, dishes, writing, and more writing (the sigh was meant mostly for the chores). Steve wanted to take a walk with me and our kiddo.

“I can’t,” I said. “I have too much to do.”

Then, as he was getting ready to leave, he offered a deal.

“How about I fold the laundry later and you come with us?”

So, I did. And even if you don’t have an awesome laundry-folding husband, skip the chores and take a walk with someone you love (even if that person is just wonderful you) today. I’ve heard countless times that the dishes can wait, but tonight I realized how true it is.

I love this! Such an important life lesson.
I grew up never knowing that dishes could wait, my mom was not the type to wait on the dishes. In college, visiting a friend, she told me we could just do them the next morning. After that, I spent a couple years leaving dishes until the next morning. Now I strike a happy balance. Most nights I get them done as I wait for food to cook, or as my husband reads books to the little ones. But I sometimes let them slide, and it’s true, they do wait.
I love your blog, so cute, can’t wait to take more of a look around!

Hi Jess! I’m so happy this resonated with you. I grew up in a similar environment. Chores were a big source of stress and unhappiness. Today, I try to be easier on myself. I used to beat myself up if the house wasn’t immaculate, but I realize now that it’s okay not to be perfect. Less perfection = more joy. xo
