Knock, knock. Who’s there? Baby.

by Corinne on December 15, 2010

I just felt the baby kick. For real. Earlier today I felt some flutters and wasn’t quite sure, but a few minutes ago? Yeah, that was the little he or she giving me an elbow or knee jab. After deciding it was time to turn in for the night, I decided to check in on my Google Reader one last time. It was midnight and I was exhausted (had just finished another hand-knit baby sock while watching Greek on Hulu). While reading Our Little Apartment‘s latest blog, I felt a definite kick! And then another and another. I couldn’t think of a better way to end the day. There’s another jab! This is weird, wonderful and making me a little teary all at the same time. Hope that he or she starts saying hello more often.

Goodnight.

18 Weeks: Check-ups & Fitness

by Corinne on December 9, 2010

cupcake

As soon as I found about my pregnancy, I jumped on Amazon.com and started reading reviews for prenatal DVD workouts. I’ve never been one to turn down a vegan cupcake, so exercise became even more of a priority as soon as I knew a little one was on the way. Sweets are my biggest weakness in the diet arena. I feel strongly about trying to have a natural birth and I’m going to do my best to be in shape for the biggest marathon of my life. Over the past few months, I’ve discovered an exercise balance that works for me and doesn’t stress me out! It’s pretty simple…

1) I walk as much as possible (although as it gets colder this is becoming more challenging).

2) I alternate between two workout DVDs and try to do one of them at least 3-4 times a week (hopefully more!)

I adore these DVDs and so far I think they’ve served me well. I’m almost 18 weeks pregnant and I feel fantastic. No back ache, little fatigue and healthy weight gain. I could just be one of the lucky gals, but I’d like to think my dedication since week 5 has paid off. Here are my go-to exercise picks:

1) The Perfect Pregnancy Workout by Kathryn Steben: If you can get over the circa 1990 style production quality, this is a challenging and easy to follow routine. I’ve been doing this DVD a few times a week for 13 weeks and I’m still not bored. I feel like I’m in better shape than I was before pregnancy and I think I owe a lot of that to Kathryn:)

2) Elena Brower’s Element: Prenatal & Postnatal Yoga: If it wasn’t for this DVD, I think I would probably be an achy mess by now. It’s a short (30-minute) routine that always leaves me feeling refreshed. I was super stressed out in the beginning of my pregnancy and this yoga DVD helped me at least feel like I was doing something to combat the stress. It’s easy to feel guilty about stress during pregnancy because you want to be in balance for the growing baby. Having this DVD continues to help me stay positive and flexible.

I’m a little worried about the lack of outdoor activity during the winter, but hopefully I’ll get a couple months of mild temperatures to get back into a walking routine before the baby arrives. Hope this post helps any mama-to-be looking for some effective fitness DVDs.

Update: I saw my midwife (one of the five I might be with for delivery) this morning and I’m thrilled to report that we finally heard the heartbeat!! The little bugger has been hiding during the past two prenatal check-ups. Baby’s heartbeat is perfect:) Nice way to start the day. I’m also right on track (thanks, Elena & Kathryn!) with my weight, which also puts me at ease.

Reverb Day 6: Make!

by Corinne on December 6, 2010

Knitted Socks

I love today’s Reverb prompt because as I mentioned yesterday, I have a new appreciation for making things.

December 6 – Make. What was the last thing you made? What materials did you use? Is there something you want to make, but you need to clear some time for it? (Author: Gretchen Rubin)

Above is a picture of the inside of my knitting bag before I pulled out the baby sock and ruined it. Looks like it’s time to start over! What better way to learn, right? I’d like to make some homemade gifts for the holidays to give to friends and family this year and it’s going to take some extra time and planning. I’m inspired to cook up something that can be given in Ball jars tied with a festive ribbon. I adore Ball jars and they’re fun to reuse. Some kind of holiday goodie, perhaps? Any ideas?

Charm City Craft Mafia

Lately, I’m drawn to all things handmade. I’m not only admiring the talents surrounding me, but I’ve got an itch to create my own treasures. More and more I want to get my hands on knitting needles and new recipes. Rediscovering my desire to create art off the page shouldn’t be a surprise. My childhood love of ceramics and drawing grew into a Studio Art minor in college, but I had almost forgotten this part of me. Over the past six years, I’ve grown further and further away from someone who had any artistic inclination. It’s funny how you can forget parts of yourself, but I’m happy to meet myself in this way again and see where it takes me.

Here’s some of my favorite moments from this weekend…

1. Charm City Craft Mafia’s Holiday Heap: After a lip smackin’ vegan meal at Yabba pot on Saturday afternoon, I headed to the Holiday Heap with my family in tow. St. John’s church was packed with craft-lovers galore. Every booth featured gorgeous handmade treasures. Jenny Jen was my favorite vendor. I want one of her Owl pillows for the nursery!

2. Elsie’s Blog Love e-Course. I devoured this tutorial today with a nice cup of orange spice tea and my kitties cuddled up next to me on the couch. It was a joy to read and packed with tips. I feel super inspired to write more here at the blog!

3. Sock class at Lovelyarns. Nothing could have been lovelier than spending Saturday morning at Sue’s yarn shop on the Avenue and knitting my first pair of baby socks. It’s challenging for sure, but so much fun. I can’t wait to knit a dresser drawer full of socks for our little one:) And maybe some other little ones. I feel like everyone is having a baby!

4. Healthy Apple Oat Wheat Muffins: These goodies are delicious and so easy! I think it’s impossible not to be joyful while baking and listening to Christmas music. My VegWeb iPhone app is a lifesaver when it comes to yummy last-minute vegan recipes.

Hope you had a wonderful weekend, too!

Baby Room Inspiration

by Corinne on November 22, 2010

My office will be transformed into a nursery in about five months and I’m starting to get excited about what we’ll be doing to spruce it up! It’s a tiny room and we like to keep things simple, but here’s some decorating inspiration I’ve found online. Birds are the theme I’ve fallen in love with. We’re going to take the Montessori approach to setting up the room, which means baby-proofing the space and using a floor bed instead of a crib. Also, many parts of the room will be at the baby’s eye level, so that once he or she starts cruising around, they’ll be lots of accessible things to do! I know it sounds odd, but don’t dis it until you’ve done some reading!

Finnian's Montessori RoomSew Liberated is packed with resources for parents interested in Montessori and all things homemade. The photos are beautiful and so is everything created by the blog’s author, Meg. Read more about the room she created for her son, Finnian, here.

Owl Tree Wall Decal - Adorable DesignsI heart etsy. This Owl Decal just makes me happy and I hope to put it on the wall next to the baby’s bed. Check out more of Surface Inspired’s designs here.

Owl BookshelfI also love this little bookshelf. Owls seem to be the most popular birds in the nursery decorating world. I’d like to have some variety, but these guys are pretty damn cute.

bird mobileAnd last, but not least. A lovely birdie mobile.

Ta-da! My Shiny New Website

by Corinne on October 15, 2010

Just a quick note to mention the unveiling of my newly designed website, courtesy of Ms. Kyla Roma at Freckled Nest! I’m a little late with the announcement, but I couldn’t be happier with the results. Working with Kyla was a joy and I highly recommend her to anyone looking for a fresh new look for their website.

In only a few hours, one of my oldest and dearest friends will arrive (we met in first grade)! I can’t wait to spend the weekend catching up with her:) More soon!
