Sometimes when I face the reality of something, whether it’s a financial hurdle, a relationship challenge, or a job-related issue, it’s just plain depressing. It’s rare, but occasionally there’s this period of time when I go to a place so deep inside myself that all I feel is stuck, frustrated and hopeless. That’s when I know I need to take a step forward, speak up, call someone or start writing my thoughts on paper.
For me, that dark place inside doesn’t really hold much truth. It’s filled with voices that have been saying the same old negative things for decades. It’s close-minded, one-tracked and quite simply–a dead end. So, when I found myself sitting in the shadows once again, I knew I needed my friends, my family, the people I trust not to judge or criticize me. I needed them to be my sounding board. My reality check. And within 24 hours everything started to turn around.
One of my most trusted and loved friends reminded me to practice gratitude, which frankly I hadn’t been focusing on much in the past couple days. She reminded me of the riches present in my life. And as we talked more, that dark place inside me began to fill with light. My surroundings, in the present moment, seemed to come into focus. And I started to feel like everything was going to be okay.
The best part about practicing gratitude is the power that lies in a tiny moment. Here are the small moments that brought me back to the present this week. I’m eternally grateful to each one and especially to my friend who always shows me the way back home.
Curling up on the couch with my kiddo.
Baking peanut butter cookies on a whim.
Making green juice for my family.
Reading Daring Greatly during my lunch break.
Cooking with Audrey on a Saturday night.
I hope that this might help you if you find yourself somewhere dim and need a little light.
❤,
Corinne

We also made it to Weber’s Cidermill on Sunday afternoon and left with the perfect pumpkin and a jug of Honey Crisp cider. Even though the summer is over, this season brings so much joy to the table (and delicious food!). It’s also an excuse to indulge–in delightful novels, holiday music, comforting recipes–and to show the people you love even more generosity and kindness.
