Steve

Early Friday morning, Steve and I packed up the car and headed north. After the car-ferry-bus trip, we made it to Martha’s Vineyard. In a nutshell, our mini-vacation consisted of: happy hammock naps, walking/exploring the island, a delicious breakfast at Beetlebung, book browsing (and buying-Corinne Demas’ Writing Circle) at Bunch of Grapes bookstore, beach strolls, and the restful activities continue. Although, I managed to fit in a sunburn, bee sting and hangover as well. We’re blessed to have a friend who opened his family’s home to us and showed us a fantastic time (many thanks to the Scott family!).

On our way home, we stopped in Providence, RI and I fell a little in love with the town. That may have something to do with the amazing restaurant, Julian’s. It’s kinda vegan heaven. I enjoyed summer (tofu) scram and tempeh sausage with fresh lemonade. I was “this” close to ordering dessert at noon, since a vegan brownie sundae with caramel sauce was on the menu, but I’ll have to taste it another time.

PS- This is August Break Days 6-10!

August Break Day 4: Window Shopping

by Corinne on August 4, 2010

Yet another reason why I love summer strolls through my neighborhood, Hampden–quirky, kitschy and charming store windows.
window-shopPS- Things are still moving along with my novel. I don’t have big news yet, but we’re headed in the right direction!

I’ve discovered a way to tackle goals I’ve had for years: online community and short-term challenges/projects.

I’m an introvert, but that doesn’t mean I don’t like people. I love being with friends and family, but I need my independence too! I get in a zone when I’m alone and I can accomplish ten times more work (home and professionally) than if I was working with a “team.” This is yet another reason why I love writing. Most of the work is solitary, but I get the joy of working with others at certain stages of the process. Perfect!

I’ve noticed over the past couple months that online programs and community challenges are helping me more than any other strategy I’ve used in the past for health and happiness.

Here’s a list of the programs I’m working on now and a couple I’m excited to get started on:

1. Couch to 5k: I’m almost in week 8 and my hubs has joined me! We started out breathless after a couple minutes and now we’re up to 25 minutes of continuous running. In addition, we’ve explored the parks in Baltimore City and it’s fun starting our day together (usually we leave the house at 6:30AM on run-days). I couldn’t be happier that we’re getting healthier together and keeping each other motivated.

2. Kris Carr’s #NoTVfor30Days and #LoveList twitter groups. Love lists are so simple and powerful. Grab a piece of paper and write ten things you love–the first things that come to your mind. It can transform your mood in seconds. People are sharing their lists on twitter and building a community of love listers. The #NoTVfor30Days initiative is boosting my daily productivity ten-fold and helping me sleep better at night. Plus, I’m not being bombarded by advertisements every night. I have never been a big tv watcher, but it is definitely what I gravitate toward when I want to tune out. Rather than switching on the tv, I’ve been more proactive about doing something else to relax–reading, de-cluttering my home, talking to friends, having meals at the table with my husband, and the list goes on.

3. Susannah Conway’s August Break starts tomorrow! I’ll be photo-blogging the whole month. Since I’ll be traveling most of August, this is the perfect time to use more pics and less words here. Can’t wait!

4. Bindu Wiles’ Shed Project. This doesn’t start until September, but I plan on participating and it has sparked a de-cluttering revolution in my home. Drawers, closets, desks, and cabinets beware. I talk a lot about my new-found de-cluttering passion in my last post.

5. Freckled Nest’s Home-Ec e-course! I finally dusted off my grandmother’s sewing machine, cleared out a section of my office and committed to learning how to use this intimidating contraption. I always stare in awe at the projects of crafty bloggers and tell myself that I just don’t have that talent. How can I really know this if I don’t try? I would love to be able to make things for our home & family and recycle many of the things I’ve found through de-cluttering.

This is my most recent recipe for happiness:

30 min. exercise/~5 days per week + de-cluttering + DIY craftiness + tv detox + Love Lists + web surfing for creative spirits = : )

Mix Tape Monday #1

by Corinne on July 26, 2010

Mix tapes are close to my heart (as I’m sure they are for many people). How do teenagers express their love for a new crush these days?

Mix Tape Monday

By the time cassette tapes became obsolete, I had collected at least thirty mixes from my then boyfriend-now husband and I cherished each one. He has a knack for discovering amazing music and he had the patience and talent to create the perfect mix. In honor of this art form and in an effort to keep its magic alive, I thought I’d start Mix Tape Mondays.

If I made a mix at this very moment, here are some of the songs that would grace the track list:

-Tether by Sarah Harmer

-Florida by Patty Griffin

-Twenty Two Fourteen by The Album Leaf

-Track 4 by Sigur Ros

-Fresh Blood by The Eels

What would be on your mix tape?

P.S. I signed up for Susannah Conway’s “August Break” (it’s free!). If you love photography (no need to be a pro–I’m not!) and want a blog-writing break this summer you should check it out too!

Home is a Funny Word

by Corinne on July 20, 2010

I use the word “home” to describe many places. Of course, my house in Baltimore is one home. My in-law’s house in Rochester, NY is another. And I even find myself saying that I’m on my way “home” when I’m heading to the office in Woodstock. Steve and I don’t know where we’ll end up next. Once he’s finished with school, we could have a lot of options…or not. I know it’s one of those situations where we’ll know what to do when the time comes, but my imagination runs wild with the possibilities.

Steve Driving

This summer, we’ll be on the road quite often and Rochester, NY is a frequent stop. We were there this past weekend and although the drive is long and we’ve done it hundreds of times, it’s always worth it. Especially now that we have a fifteen month old niece! We spend most of our time hanging out at ma and pop in-law’s (I love that Steve grew up in that house!), at my sis-in-law’s (did I mention how cute their kid is yet?) and we usually end up in the South Wedge neighborhood multiple times (vegan bakery, bar with micro brews, cafes, and streets packed with old gorgeous houses–need I say more?). I could meander down the side streets with a cup of iced coffee for hours! I always get a kick out of walking past the apartment my parents lived in when I was born:) Some of my best story ideas and most vivid dreams happen when I’m in Rochester. Same for Steve! Maybe it’s a sign…

I think that Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros said it best when they wrote Home: “Ahh, Home/Let me come Home/Home is wherever I’m with you…” (Sidenote: the Home RAC Remix is amazing). Watch this video and notice that it is impossible not to smile.

Over the past two weeks, I’ve started waking up around 6AM, which gives me an extra hour and a half each morning. I’m tired, but hanging in there, hoping that I’ll be able to adjust and fall asleep earlier soon. When I was in high school and college, I would sleep until 11AM or noon if possible. During the past couple years, my ideal wake-up time has been around 8AM. I just never thought of myself as an early riser. But I’ve also never seen myself as a runner…which is also changing fast. Steve and I rolled out of bed at six this morning and ran in our neighborhood for thirty minutes. I would have laughed if someone told me that we would be doing this six months ago.

I’ve noticed my “can’t-dos” a lot more lately. I’ve always accepted these things as part of who I am. “Don’t be so hard on yourself,” I was told as a child. “You don’t have to do that.” This worked for me, since I was very shy as a kid (and still can be today…), but I don’t want to give up so easily anymore. I’m not saying that I wished my parents had forced me to be on the volleyball team in high school or join the drama club because I probably would have been a nervous miserable wreck, but I’m an adult now. I need to be my own parent.

Maybe I should make a list of things, small and large, that I’ve always told myself I can’t do…and then just try to do them. This literally came to me while writing this blog, which I thought was just going to be about waking up early and running, so we’ll see what appears on the paper when I start my list!

What’s on your “can’t do” list?

PS- Writing update: Revisions are going well and my manuscript is back in my agent’s hands. In the meantime, I’m working on Novel #2, which I started during the query process. The characters and place are close to my heart because the book is set in Castile, NY, which is close to my Dad’s hometown- Leroy, NY. The main character’s home is modeled after my grandmother’s house, where my Dad grew up. I love weaving these personal details into my stories:)
